REVIEW: The Hedge Witch by Cari Thomas - Grimdark Magazine The latest offering from the Sunday Times bestselling author Cari Thomas is her novella The Hedge Witch. It resulted in my debut novel Threadneedle, the first in my Language of Magic series. An enchanting new novella set in the magical world of Sunday Times bestseller Threadneedle. A world where magic gleams both light and very, very dark. A world where libraries made of books breathe dusty pages beneath the city and witch clubs serve up magical cocktails and vintage shops sell memories. I split my days between freelance work and roaming London, writing in cafés and libraries and any hideouts I could find, eating far too much cake and imagining a magical world hidden within today's London. I quit my job and wrote a book about magic. I worked as a journalist for various publications and at a creative agency, before finally doing what I'd always wanted to do. I grew up in the Wye Valley area of Wales and moved to London in my twenties. ![]()

Though I attend screenings at the Nuart Theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard with some frequency, I’ve sadly missed the heyday of the public service announcement above. I don’t smoke, but it certainly wouldn’t occur to me to start while moviegoing, a pursuit that, here in Los Angeles, takes up a considerable chunk of my free time. The idea of smoking in a movie theater, or anywhere one might go to have a good time, seems outlandish in 21st-century America, far more fantastical than most of what you’d actually see projected onscreen. ![]() ![]() ![]() One wonders if he thought this journey quixotic in nature. The top teams are more likely to lose this year, but I still think you’re gonna get the champion, or Final Four teams, out of that group. I think the eight teams I’m thinking of now could all lose in the Sweet 16. It can open up for a team and a bracket, but it’s not wide open. This paper argues that, although the book had a key role in the struggle for gender equality, much of Friedan’s intellectual legacy, her most salient and critical explanations for the genesis of the feminine mystique, has been lost, forgotten, or misrepresented. Betty Friedan’s landmark manifesto, The Feminine Mystique, ignited the “second wave” of the women’s movement in 1963, permanently transforming the social fabric of the United States. ![]() ![]() This is not the quality I expect from an audiobook. An additional pain are the short sentences. ![]() If the kidnappers had actually killed someone close to Mark, such behaviour could be reasonable, but that is not the case. "What would you do if you found a spaceship?" In general I like this kind of thought experiments, but this book is a total waste of time. ![]() ![]() ![]() This colorful, occasionally amusing, but somewhat shaggy book may strike readers of history as lacking in urgency. But the conclusions he draws feel slight. That said, the pacing is brisk, the writing is clear and engaging, and Cohen’s characterizations of the presidents are mostly vivid. Anecdotes (in 1844, a ship hosting a party of dignitaries, including President Tyler, suffered an explosion when demonstrating its gunpower, killing and maiming many guests) and overdoses of contextual details too often take precedence over the ostensible analytical focus. ![]() ![]() After a final chapter listing various near deaths of other presidents, Cohen concludes that the extant process for selecting vice-presidential candidates and integrating them into an administration’s day-to-day business needs improvement, perhaps by requiring v-p candidates to have previously run for president or to have been selected not by campaign teams but party committees. Positing that “the matter of succession has been trivialized by voters, candidates, and lawmakers,” Cohen presents brief, confidently told narratives of each transition (Teddy Roosevelt’s reelection, for instance, “represented a glorious triumph for a man who believed he was destined to be president”). vice presidents who took over the presidency upon the deaths of their predecessors in this entertaining but clunky history.
